The following is a listing of the standing committees and the descriptions of what duties those
committees have. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please notify the council president
at president@nnptas.org.
Arts in Education Committee
This committee is responsible for encouraging local unit participation in PTA "Reflections" project.
They assist local units in identifying community resources available to local schools that may be helpful in
supplementing their education program, coordintate the "Reflections" award ceremony at the Council level,
and assist in the coordination of the project on district and state levels.
Audit Committee
This committee will offer assistance to local units that are unable to get their yearly audits done.
The committee will also host a yearly "Audit Day/Evening", where units can send a representative and have
their audits done as well as learn how to audit PTA pooks.
Budget Committee
The primary responsibility of the Budget Committee is to formulate a budget meeting the needs of Council
to be presented at the first general meeting of the year. This committee's function ceases upon adoption of
the budget.
Bylaws Committee
Works directly with local units assisting as needed with bylaw revisions and resubmission. Maintains list of
bylaw deadlines for each fo the local units in the Council. Reminds local units of approaching deadlines.
Essay Contest
This committee coordinates efforts of local middle schol and high school units by making sure that proper
informaiton is received by each school, information is disseminated to students, judges are secured, and that
proper recognition is given each winner. Assist the school in any way possible to ensure that all interested
students are given the opportunity to participate. Coordinate the project at the Council, District and State level.
Health and Wellness
This committee's function is to support the Newport News Public Schools Student and Staff Wellness initiative and to
organize the Family Fun and Fitness Fair"
Hospitality Committee
In charge of social arrangements for Council activities requiring food and/or beverages, the Hospitality
Committee's primary responsibility is the organizaiton and handling of the President's Reception and Council
Award receptions.
Legislation/Education Committee
The Legislation/Education Committee provides information to local units about the state and national
legislation programs. Provides contact information for local representatives to voice concern about bills that
affect children.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee's responsibilities include:
- Contacting local unit Membership Chairs and offering assistance
- Maintaining records of local unit membership and assisting treasurers in collection of dues.
- Establishing Council membership goals and reporting results to Council
- Advising the President of all membership awards and seeing that proper recognition is given to local units
Newsletter
This committee's function is to obtain pertinent information concerning Council activities, units,
and other PTA information and disseminate through the publication of a newlsetter.
Scholarship Committee
The purpose of this committee is to administer scholarship funds according to established criteria.
This committee is responsible for soliciting contributions from local units and seeking other funding
possibilities in the private sector. The committee disseminates information about the scholarship
program to all local units.
Volunteer/Staff Member of the Year Committee
This committee provides applications and information for both Volunteer of the Year and Administrator
of the Year to each local unit. Coordinates judging and makes sure proper recognition is given to each
winner at the April meeting.
