The following is a list of recommendations to ensure that your local unit PTA continues
to be effective and successful:
- Cooperation of principal, assistant principal, and faculty and a good executive board
- Enthusiastic and hard working committee chairpersons
- Active parents - this can be encouraged by keeping in touch with them through a newsletter
- Good public relations between the school, home, and community
- An informative PTA handbook
- Good PTA programs for students
- Profitable fundraising projects
- A thoroughly planned and constructive budget
- Involvement in cultural arts programs
- A well organized volunteer program
- A good membership campaign, especially during the yearly membership month (October)
- Regularly occurring executive board meetings
- Application of the National PTA Handbook
- Implementation of a quality hospitality effort
- Working with and for the Newport News Council of PTAs
- Reading the local paper to keep abreast of issues of PTA and education importance on
a national, state, and local level
- Observe special days and celebrations (e.g. American Education Week, PTA Day at the
General Assembly, Teacher Appreciation Week, Founder's Day)
- Excellent record keeping, especially a history of financial records
- Sharing of all subscriptions received by the local unit president
- Sharing of Council Newsletters with the local unit board and membership
